Alkaline water produced by a water ionizer has the ability to neutralize oxidants like hydrogen peroxide that at excessive levels causes premature aging and the onset of disease. The antioxidant properties of alkaline water have mostly been studied in laboratory testing, but preliminary clinical testing shows that alkaline water has a “sparing effect” on the antioxidant enzymes produced by the body. In clinical testing, people who drank alkaline water maintained higher levels of antioxidant enzymes than they had when before they started drinking alkaline water.
What gives alkaline water it’s antioxidant potential is the hydroxyl ion. The benefit of hydroxyl-rich artesian spring water has been known for centuries. People have been flocking to springs like Nordeneau in Germany which have hydroxyl-rich spring water because of the amazing effect it has on health. It has long been believed that artesian spring water may reverse some of the effects of aging.
Alkaline water from a water ionizer is also hydroxyl rich because water ionizers remove acidic carbonate from tap water. Tap water contains mineral carbonates – calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The calcium and magnesium in water are alkaline, and they are essential minerals that are good for your health. Carbonate, which is CO2 dissolved in water is acidic. It balances out the healthy benefits of the minerals in tap water. When a water ionizer removes the carbonate from water, the minerals react with water molecules, and gain a hydroxyl ion from them. This process makes alkaline water from a water ionizer very similar to artesian spring water. It is the hydroxyl ion in alkaline water that is responsible for alkaline water’s antioxidant potential. A water ionizer is the best way to get minerals from water because you get all of the beneficial minerals, and none of the acidic carbonate.
How a water ionizer works
Water ionizers use an electromagnetic process called electrodialysis to split water into two different streams: Alkaline water, with healthy minerals in it, and acidic water with the dissolved CO2 in it. CO2 acidifies water, it turns it into a solution of carbonic acid. This is why, when you see a water ionizer running, there are two streams of water coming out.
Triple the antioxidant benefit of alkaline water with Vitamin C
Did you know? Combining alkaline water with Vitamin C triples the antioxidant strength of Vitamin C! It’s easy to do, simply squeeze the juice of a lemon into a glass of alkaline water and drink. Two glasses of alkaline water mixed with lemon juice in the morning is a great way to jump start your digestive system and start your day off with a healthy dose of antioxidants!
Mineral Antioxidants found in Alkaline Water
Some of the trace minerals found in drinking water have proven antioxidant effects in the body. Trace minerals are minerals that you only need to get a tiny amount of each day for good health. In fact, it can be harmful to health to get too much of these minerals. Thankfully, water contains only tiny amounts of these minerals, so there’s no way you can overdo it. The antioxidant minerals found in water include: copper, manganese, selenium, and zinc.
If these trace minerals are present in your source water, your alkaline water will also them. The good news is – you only need tiny amounts of these trace minerals for good health! Drinking water is the ideal way to get trace minerals, because the body can only absorb small amounts of these minerals at a time. Water is ideal because it only has tiny amounts of these trace minerals. One of the major drawbacks of mineral supplements is that they deliver a lot of minerals, at once – more than your body can absorb.
How to use Alkaline Water for Mineral Supplementation
The World Health Organization recommends: That you get 10 – 20% of your daily needs of minerals from drinking water. To do this, simply drink alkaline water throughout your day. Each glass of alkaline water will give you some minerals. If you drink enough water for proper hydration, about eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day, you’ll get enough minerals from your water for health purposes. Drinking alkaline water keeps you hydrated and adds essential minerals to your diet. Drinking alkaline water is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to maintain and improve your hydration and health.
