Alkaline water is rich in hydroxyl ions. Some people claim alkaline water is oxygen rich, but they’re wrong. Alkaline water has a higher pH than regular water. Keep in mind that pH stands for potential Hydrogen – this means that alkaline water has the potential to accept more hydrogen ions than neutral pH water. There is no such thing as oxygen rich alkaline water. Claims that alkaline water is oxygen rich contradict the basic laws of chemistry.
What is oxygenated water?
Oxygenated water is oxidative water; it is not healthy to drink! When you add oxygen to something, you oxidize it. If you add oxygen to alkaline water, you will neutralize it and lose the health benefits. Why do so many people claim alkaline water oxygenates the body? Because it may enable the hemoglobin in the blood to carry more oxygen.
The body needs alkalinity to absorb oxygen
Most of the oxygen that is absorbed in the lungs is absorbed by the hemoglobin. The hemoglobin’s ability to absorb oxygen is pH dependent. Alkalinity helps the hemoglobin release acidic waste, and frees it up to absorb more oxygen.
Keep in mind that oxygen is absorbed in the lungs, not the intestines! Claims that you can oxygenate the body by drinking oxygen rich water are false. Oxygenating the intestines may actually be bad for you. The beneficial probiotics in the intestines are anaerobic microbes – this means they thrive in environments that lack oxygen. If you oxygenate the intestines, you kill the beneficial probiotics in them!
The science behind the benefits of alkaline wateris a lot more complicated than most people realize. Most people selling alkaline water machines don’t truly understand the chemistry and physics of alkaline water. This is why the urban legend of “oxygen rich” alkaline water is so widespread on the internet.
