A recent article in the online publication Daily Mail showed how Sarah, age 42, took 10 years off of her face in just one month. How did she do it? She drank three liters of water a day for a month. Chronic dehydration robs the skin on your face of the water. When that happens, your facial skin loses volume and elasticity. Dehydrated skin damages more easily, so wrinkles and lines appear.

30 Days to better health: What happened when Sarah decided to drink water

Week One: When Sarah started drinking water she weighed 119 lbs and had a 28-inch waist. Her urine color started out as dark yellow – another sign that she was dehydrated. She was worried at first that 3 liters of water was “an awful lot”. Her doctor told her: “I suggest you have a big jug of water in the morning, then another in the afternoon and another in the evening.” He also told her: “Your kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood before turning it to urine, will quickly feel the benefit, as they will be getting a good flush through.”

Before Sarah started drinking water, she had to ‘go’ about 3 times per day. By the end of her first day of drinking 3 liters of water, she had to “go” a total of 6 times, and her urine turned clear. Sarah also noticed that her bowel movements, which she described as “sluggish” had become “much more lively”

Does coffee, tea, or alcohol dehydrate you?

According to the British Nutritional Foundation: Moderate amounts of caffeine do not cause dehydration, so they do count towards your fluid intake. But alcoholic drinks do not hydrate you. Alcohol is a diuretic a substance that causes you to urinate. For every one alcoholic drink, your body can eliminate up to four times as much water.

Prevent hangovers by drinking water

Hangover headaches result from dehydration: the body’s organs try to make up for a lack of water by stealing it from the brain, as a result of which it actually shrinks. Headaches result from the pulling on the membranes that connect your brain to your skull. Ouch. Luckily, I escape all this and wake up hangover-free.

For years I’ve been doing ten minutes of yoga every morning straight after I get up, but I’ve been feeling stiffer over the past six months. Yet since I started drinking more water my flexibility has improved. Gemma Critchley, from the British Dietetic Association, confirms that water helps lubricate the joints.

Week Two Sarah lost one pound, her waist size remained 28 inches. Sarah notes that her complexion improved, and her skin tone was evener. The wrinkles under her eyes became less prominent, and the shadows under her eyes began to diminish.

Sarah asked Gemma Critchley if the juice was an acceptable substitute for water. Critchley told her:”’If you drink a large glass of juice, you could be consuming more energy than you need,” which Critchley warned would lead to weight gain.

Sarah’s chronic headaches: Gone. Cellulite on thighs: Gone.

During week two, Sarah noticed to her delight that she hasn’t had a headache for over a week since she started drinking more water. She also noticed that her bowels continued to improve. Sarah was concerned that drinking a lot of water would make her stomach feel bloated, but the opposite thing happened. She noticed that it had become flatter than usual. Her husband was delighted to observe that the cellulite on her thighs had vanished.

Week Three:  Sarah’s weight remained the same (118 pounds) but she lost a half inch from her waist (27.5 inches).  Sarah’s face continued to look more youthful. The dark rings and wrinkles under her eyes had virtually disappeared, and her skin looks plumper and better nourished.

Sarah also noticed that she no longer rubbed her eyes when she woke up. She also discovered that when she put on makeup, her eyes seemed to be less wrinkled, and her skin more elastic.
