An alkaline water ionizer makes alkaline water that has effects on the body that you can measure. One of the easiest tests you can do to see what effect alkaline water has on you is the 24-hour Average Urine pH Test. Low urine pH is a feature in Metabolic Syndrome the symptoms of which can include:
- High Blood Pressure
- High Blood Sugar
- High Cholesterol levels
- Kidney Stones
- Obesity
Alkaline water may help raise your urine pH. This article is intended to provide you with a means to verify that alkaline water is affecting your urine pH.
Why testing your urine pH may matter
According to Low Urine pH: A Novel Feature of the Metabolic Syndrome, a person with a urine pH of 6.15 or greater is likely to have none of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. A person with a urine pH of 5.69 – just .46 pH lower – is likely to have all 5 of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
What you will need:
- pH test strips – Make sure they are for testing urine pH!
- Small sample jar
- A notebook or other means of recording the results
How to perform the 24 Hour Average Urine pH test
Start when you get up in the morning. Collect and test your first urination, and all subsequent urination throughout the day up to and including bedtime. Test each sample when you collect it, record the date, time, and urine pH in your log.
You should also note the times you drank alkaline water during the day, what the pH of the water was, and how much you drank. That will allow you to see the relationship between drinking alkaline water, and your urine pH.
How to properly collect a urine sample
You must wash your genitals before collecting a sample to avoid contamination. Allow the first part of your urination to fall in the toilet, and then start collecting your sample. Urine pH does not keep, so test your urine pH right away.
Understanding the results of your urine test
After you have tested your samples and recorded the results, you can calculate the average pH of your urine. Healthy urine pH can be anywhere from 4 to 8 pH, it’s typically lower an hour after meals or first thing in the morning. These times are typically when your body is excreting acids. If you see urine pH levels that consistently fall outside of the 4 – 8 pH range, you should see your doctor right away.
If your average urine pH is about 6.15 or greater, congratulations! Based on Low Urine pH: A Novel Feature of the Metabolic Syndrome you may have reduced your risk of suffering from the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. But only your doctor can tell for sure!
Effect of Alkaline Water on Urine pH
Anywhere from a half hour to an hour after drinking alkaline water, you should see an increase in your urine pH. If you eat a healthy, balanced diet and drink alkaline water, your average urine pH should rise towards healthy levels over time. If you are concerned about the results of this test, talk to your doctor. Your doctor may order additional tests or may find a reason that this test isn’t helpful in your case.
Keep in mind that alkaline water may not have an immediate effect on urine pH. If you are new to alkaline water, you may want to do more than one 24 hour urine test, to see if there is an improvement over time. Testing yourself more than once is recommended for best results. As with any medical self-test, you should discuss the results of this test with your doctor if you are concerned.
Limitations of the Urine pH test
Alkaline water isn’t the only thing that affects your urine pH. The foods you eat have a huge effect. If your urine pH is consistently low, try modifying your diet first. An alkaline diet rich in vegetables is a healthy choice.
This test is intended for use by a healthy person who wants to maintain their health. If you have health problems, talk to your doctor to find out how these problems could affect your urine pH. Medications you are taking may also affect this test.

Great advice in this article. I had a urine test about two weeks ago and the Ph came up to 5.5; I want to raise it to about 6.5 or 7.0. Alkaline water makes sense and the testing with Ph strips is also good advice. I will do both!
Thanks!!!!

Do cancer patients have a low urine ph? If so how low?
Life Ionizers Admin
They can have a low urine pH, but there’s no direct link between urine pH and cancer. The whole story is fairly complex: For example, a low urine pH of less than 6.0 can be associated with a higher risk of bladder cancer, but it does not mean that you have bladder cancer. The association between urine pH and other cancers is even less clear. In fact, if you have a consistently low urine pH, your problem is most likely metabolic acidosis, not cancer.
