Alkaline Water Exposed: The Artificial Alkaline Water Scam. Consumers being bilked by “Artificially Alkaline Water” The latest health scam
Can water ionizers split water molecules and create “artificial” alkaline water? No. When you split a water molecule in half, you get hydrogen and oxygen, not alkalinity. But a new alkaline water health scam that has been circulating around the internet claims just that.
Consumers seeking to purchase an alkaline water system should be aware of this latest health claim scam, which is intended to scare consumers into buying a water filter system (instead of a water ionizer). Like many health scams, the artificially alkaline water scam is based on pseudoscience and scare tactics. Worse yet, the artificially alkaline water scam is actually scaring people away from the healthiest form of alkaline water, which is “reduced water” which has many scientific studies backing up how effective it is. Reduced water or alkaline mineral water ionizers are also approved by the Japanese and Korean FDA for use as a medical device. Learn More
What is artificially alkalinity?
The American Water Works Association
.(AWWA) “is the largest nonprofit, scientific and educational association dedicated to managing and treating water.” The AWWA has been dedicated to improving water treatment since 1881. According to the AWWA, artificial alkalinity is:
“Lime (Ca(OH)2) is often used in conjunction with aluminum or ferrous sulfate to provide artificial alkalinity in water”
So what is “Artificially Alkaline” water? It’s water that has lime added to it. According to the AWWA and the EPA, tap water must have a pH of at least 6.5. If your local water authority determines that your tap water has a pH of less than 6.5, they will add lime to it to raise the water’s pH – which makes your tap water artificially alkaline water. If you live in the eastern United States, it’s very likely that your water has been made artificially alkaline by your local water authority to make it safe to drink.
Is artificial alkaline water with lime added to it safe to drink?
Yes, according to the AWWA, water treatment plants have been using lime to raise the pH of water since the 1800s. Water treated with lime to raise its pH is healthier for you to drink than acidic water – that’s why they add lime to it! Acidic water corrodes pipes, and dissolves metals, that makes it unhealthy to drink, and damages plumbing. That is why water treatment plants have been making water artificially alkaline since the 1800’s.
Do water ionizers make water artificially alkaline?
No. Water ionizers convert some of the magnesium carbonates and calcium carbonates in your tap water into calcium and magnesium hydroxides. The US EPA recommends using calcium and magnesium hydroxide to fortify foods and beverages with essential nutrition. In fact, calcium hydroxide is used to fortify infant formula and orange juice with calcium.
Are Calcium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide FDA Approved?
Yes. The FDA maintains a database of things that are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). Both calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are in the FDA GRAS database:
FDA Approval Calcium hydroxide
FDA Approval Magnesium hydroxide
Can you find water with calcium and magnesium hydroxide in nature?
Yes. The worlds most famous spring waters for health have these mineral hydroxides in them. People have been seeking out these healthy reduced waters such as Norden in Germany and Hita Tenryosui in Japan for centuries. These waters are called reduced waters, just like the alkaline water from a water ionizer.
Why the world’s healthiest alkaline spring waters are called reduced waters
The reason the healthiest spring waters on earth are called reduced waters is that they reduce a process called oxidation. It’s a chemical process that’s happening in your body right now that is destroying your cells and DNA, and contributing to premature aging. It’s also the chemical process that causes rust.
Oxidation destroys your DNA and tissues and causes iron to rust by chemically adding oxygen to them. In your body, chemicals that cause oxidation are known as Reactive Oxygen Species, some of which are free radicals. As you probably know, we need to consume antioxidants to stop the oxidation caused by free radicals.
Antioxidants work by neutralizing the chemicals that cause oxidation. Chemists call the anti-oxidation process reduction. The ability of alkaline water, and antioxidant foods to reduce oxidation is called Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP).
Are there any side effects of drinking alkaline water?
No. People have been drinking alkaline water for decades and enjoying better health. In fact, water ionizers are found in more than 20% of Japanese homes. The Ministry of Health in Japan approves of the use of alkaline water for daily drinking and as a treatment for a mild digestive upset.
Do the benefits of alkaline water wear off after 30 days?
No. A recent study, called The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects found that the benefits build up over time and just keep coming. In the study, people who drank alkaline water lost an average of 12 pounds over two months. They also lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduced bone loss.
What are “naturally” alkaline water systems?
There is no such thing, ‘naturally alkaline water.’ It’s a sales term invented to make alkaline water filter systems look better. Health scammers that sell ‘naturally’ alkaline water systems invented the term to hide the fact that all they’re selling you is a water filter.
There’s nothing wrong with an alkaline water filter system. You just need to be careful of how much you pay for them. For example, you can buy Life’s Pitcher of Life alkaline water filter pitcher for $50.
How long have people been drinking alkaline water by Life Ionizers?
Our parent company, EarthTrade Water, began selling water ionizers in the U.S in 1996. Since that time, we’ve sold water ionizers to doctors such as NY Times best selling author Dr. Don Colbert.
