There is an ongoing debate about the health benefits of alkaline water. On one side are people who own water ionizers, who swear by the health benefits of drinking alkaline ionized water. On the other side are skeptics, who claim that the health benefits reported by alkaline ionized water drinkers are attributed to the placebo effect. But the skeptics are probably wrong in this case. The placebo effect can last for years, but ultimately there would be a “moment of truth”:
A placebo doesn’t change a person’s health; it just makes them believe it did. So when the placebo effect wore off, the person would realize it didn’t work. Water ionizers have been in continuous use for almost 2 decades now, and have been exactly zero reports of the health benefits “wearing off”
What is the Placebo Effect?
The placebo effect is the tendency for a person to believe that a drug, supplement, medical procedure has improved their health. The placebo effect doesn’t work all the time, and it only works on some health problems. Studies have shown that placebos are effective in 50 – 60 percent of people with certain health conditions: pain, depression, some heart ailments, gastric ulcers and other stomach complaints.
Is there a way to prove that alkaline water is not a placebo?
Yes, alkaline water has been shown to increase the pH of urine, so it has an effect. Research has also shown a link between alkaline water and bone health. In particular, alkaline water was shown to reduce markers of bone loss. This proves conclusively that alkaline water is not a placebo, because a placebo would not affect urine pH or markers of bone loss.
The effect of alkaline water on urine pH and urine calcium can be (and is) easily tested with simple tests that you can do at home. Urine pH test kits are readily available, and so are urine calcium kits. Many alkaline water drinkers have done these tests on themselves.

These tests allow people to monitor the effects of alkaline ionized water in their own bodies. Life Ionizers cares about the health of its customers and recommends people check their urine pH and calcium levels. One out of every two women will suffer a hip fracture caused by weakened bones. One in three men will suffer the same fate. Bone health problems have reached epidemic proportions in the US and Europe, Life urges you to take charge of your health, and protect your bones.
