Studies show that ionized alkaline water provides a beneficial source of age-fighting antioxidants. This makes it better for you than plain water.
Many water ionizer ads claim that the benefit comes from splitting or structuring water molecules, but hard science (and many skeptics) suggests they’re wrong.
Life Ionizers has been conducting research over the past year to discover the truth about how water ionizers make healthy water. Our research reveals that benefits of ionized alkaline water are provided by mineral ions in the water, which gain electrons through electrodialysis – a process that is like electrolysis, but it uses a special diaphragm to separate the charged plates.
How a Water Ionizer makes antioxidant ionized alkaline water
When water enters an ionizer’s chamber, it contains dissolved mineral salts, such as calcium carbonate and magnesium sulfate. The charged plates of an ionizer create an electromagnetic field that is powerful enough to overcome the electron charge that holds the mineral salts together, breaking them in half.
One half of the mineral salts are made of alkali ions, mostly:
- potassium K+
- Calcium Ca2+
- Magnesium Mg+
FACT: These alkali ions are what puts the alkaline in alkaline water!
The other half of the mineral salts are made of acidic ions, mostly:
- Carbonate CO3-
FACT: These acidic ions are what puts the acid in acidic water!
ERW = Alkaline Water = Positively-charged ions such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium that are drawn towards the negatively charged plate (known as a cathode).
EOW = Acidic Water = Negatively charged ions such as chloride and sulfate which are drawn towards the positively charged plate (known as an anode).
The alkaline and acidic ions, after being separated, cross a special diaphragm called an ion-permeable membrane. It allows the ions to cross over, but not cross back. This ion splitting process is called electrodialysis. After the ions in it pass across the membrane, the water becomes separated into two halves, one with the alkaline mineral ions, and the other with acidic ions. After separation, these ions only exist on their own for a fraction of a second. They then combine with water molecules and form new compounds. Mineral hydrates on the alkaline side, acidic carbonate on the acidic side. The mineral hydrates in alkaline water are composed of a mineral ion and a hydroxyl ion (OH-). The acidic water is a solution of the carbonate and hydrogen, which is called carbonic acid.
Water Ionizer + Minerals + Water = Antioxidant Minerals!
The main beneficial minerals that are found in ionized alkaline water are:
- Calcium hydrate – Ca(OH)2
- Potassium hydrate – KOH
- Magnesium hydrate – Mg(OH)2 – Also found in Milk of Magnesia!
These mineral hydroxides give ionized alkaline water its pH and –ORP values. There are also trace minerals may be present in ionized alkaline water, such as zinc and manganese, which are also powerful antioxidants.
Health Benefits of Minerals from Water Ionizers
The mineral hydrates found in ionized alkaline water have medically recognized health benefits. Research shows that calcium is actually 30% easier to absorb from water than it is from plant-based sources. There are many health benefits of that come from drinking alkaline water
