Have you heard the term “forever chemicals”? The news has been reporting how these contaminants have made their way into our water supply, but what are forever chemicals, how will they affect our health and how can we remove them from our water?
We have all of the answers for you!
Why Forever Chemicals are Called “Forever”
According to a top Harvard School of Public Health scientist, Dr. Joseph Allen, forever chemicals are synthetic chemicals that once in the environment, will be there for generations.
These chemicals don’t break down. And that’s how he coined the term.
The technical terms for these forever chemicals are perfluorochemicals (PFCs) and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pronounced (pee- fahzz). There are over 4700 of these compounds found in our environment.
Some of these chemicals are:
- perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), pronounced (pee – foe’ ah)
- perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), pronounced (pee’- foss)
- GenX, a shortened name for a type of PFAS that was found in the lower Cape Fear River, a source of drinking water for those in North Carolina in June 2017.
To a knowledgeable consumer, it’s the “fluoro” inside the name of these chemicals that makes it a forever chemical. This type of chemical is loaded with fluorine attached to carbon atoms.
Forever chemicals are the types of chemicals that don’t break down with heat, chemicals, don’t burn, and stay around in the environment for hundreds of years. As if that’s not bad enough, these forever chemicals have been linked with health problems.
Where PFAS and PFOAs are Found
The big problem is that PFAS and PFOAs are everywhere. Some of them that were created by the 3M Company include water-repellent products such as Scotchguard and C8. C8 was used by DuPont in the production of Teflon pots and pans, which most people have used in their kitchens.
The fluorinated chemicals leach into the foods that are cooked in the Teflon pans. Once inside the body, they make their way into the GI tract and the blood. From there, they accumulate in organs and may cause organ damage.
Don’t let forever chemicals ever enter your drinking water.
