Why you can’t get Alkalosis from Alkaline Water

Alkalosis is a condition where the blood’s pH gets too high. The safe pH range for blood is 7.35 – 7.45, if it goes outside that range for

Alkaline water even at a high pH can’t cause alkalosis because it isn’t a strong alkali

very long, it can be life threatening. Many people wonder if you can get alkalosis from drinking alkaline water. The answer to that question is no. Alkaline water made by a water ionizer isn’t a strong enough base (alkali) to overcome the body’s systems for maintaining a balanced pH. You could get alkalosis from drinking water mixed with baking soda, and that is one of the reasons you should never alkalize water with baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate is a strong alkali that can overwhelm your body’s ability to maintain its pH balance.

pH vs. alkalinity: Why alkaline water can’t cause alkalosis

For a healthy person, it requires a powerful base (alkali) to overcome your body’s ability to maintain its pH balance. What makes a base a powerful alkali is its alkalinity, not its pH. Alkalinity refers to a bases’ ability to resist changes in pH. Baking soda is a great example. You can neutralize a can of soda with one teaspoon of baking soda. To neutralize that same can of soda using alkaline water from a water ionizer with a pH of 11+ it takes 17 eight-ounce glasses of that 11+ pH alkaline water.

Baking soda has a pH of around 12. But as you can see, even though alkaline water with a pH of 11 has almost as high a pH as baking soda, it takes a lot more alkaline water to neutralize that soda. In fact, it’s such a powerful base, that baking soda can cause alkalosis! For that reason, you should never try to alkalize your body with baking soda. It’s too easy to overdo it.

Important: If you have any of these health conditions, talk to your doctor before you start drinking alkaline water. These health conditions make you susceptible to alkalosis:

    • Liver disease
    • Lung disease
  • Kidney disease

Your doctor will be able to determine is alkaline water is right for you.

How can you get alkalosis?

You can get alkalosis either through illness or through poisoning. There are four types:

    • Respiratory
    • Metabolic
    • Hypochloremic
  • Hypokalemic

Respiratory

Respiratory alkalosis happens when you don’t have enough carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. Carbon dioxide acidifies the blood. If you have an unsafe drop in carbon dioxide, your blood pH can go above the safe pH level of 7.45.

Causes of respiratory alkalosis

    • Hyperventilation
    • High fever
    • Lack of oxygen
    • Salicylate poisoning
    • Being at high altitude
    • Liver disease
  • Lung disease

Metabolic

There are two ways your body can develop metabolic alkalosis. You can either lose too much acidity or gain too much bases (alkalis). Most of the ways these things can happen are through poisoning.

Causes of metabolic alkalosis

    • Excessive vomiting
    • Overdosing on diuretics
    • Adrenal disease
    • The body loses a lot of potassium or sodium in a short time
    • Overdosing on antacids
    • Overdosing on baking soda
    • Overdosing on laxatives
  • Alcohol abuse

Note that overdosing on baking soda is on the list. Baking soda is a very powerful base (alkali). It’s actually easy to overdose on it. For that reason, you should never alkalize water by mixing baking soda in it.

Hypochloremic

Hypochloremic alkalosis happens when chloride levels in the body decline significantly. This condition is often caused by prolonged vomiting or sweating. You get most of your chloride from salt. Because of this, remember to drink fluids with electrolytes including salt on hot days or whenever you work hard enough to sweat a lot.

Hypokalemic

Your body enters a state of hypokalemic alkalosis when your body doesn’t have enough potassium. Not eating enough potassium is rarely the cause of hypokalemic alkalosis. Instead, kidney disease, excessive sweating, and diarrhea are common ways people develop it.

The symptoms of alkalosis

The symptoms you get when developing alkalosis can vary. Here are the most common symptoms people experience:

    • Nausea
    • Numbness
    • Prolonged muscle spasms
    • Muscle twitching
  • Hand tremors
