If you have bad breath, unusual body odors, and/or bowel problems, your body might be trying to tell you something. Our bodies exist in a toxic world, and it’s not unusual for the body’s systems to become overwhelmed by it. Detoxification is a natural means of helping your body to “catch up” to the toxins that can pollute your inner environment.
To find out if you should consider detoxifying, take our detoxification self-test below. If you get a score of 4 or higher, you may benefit from a detox:
Detoxification Self Test
1. Do you skip a daily bowel movement more than once a week? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Skipped bowel movements can be a sign that your body’s solid waste elimination system has become backed up and/or dehydrated
2. Do you take prescription, recreational or over the counter drugs? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Drugs that are made in laboratories can and do contain toxic ingredients that can build up in your system over time
3. Chronic digestive troubles or gas/bloating? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Constant digestive upset, especially with gas and bloating is a sign of harmful bacteria in the gut that release toxins your body has to expel. This can be due to an acidic pH balance in the gut. Alkaline water has been shown to raise pH levels in the gut. (Vorobjeva, N.V)
4. Do you eat fast or processed food? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Fast or processed foods contain loads of artificial ingredients that your body may not be able to eliminate on it’s own.
5. Have you ever smoked or been exposed to excess second hand smoke? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Cigarette smoke contains hundreds of harmful toxins such as formaldehyde. Toxins from cigarette smoke can and do accumulate in the lungs.
6. Do you have any skin problems? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Your skin (via sweating) is your largest organ of detoxification. Persistent skin problems that defy medical treatment may be a sign that your skin is overwhelmed by toxins.
7. Do you drink alcohol? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Alcohol in moderation is ok, and may even be beneficial. But it still adds to the toxic load your body must expel to maintain it’s health
8. Do you live in a major city or close to a hydraulic fracking (Hydrofracking) operation? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Major cities are significant sources of pollution, both in the environment and in your body. Hydro Fracking (fracking for short) poisons the air and water for at least a kilometer around the fracking operation.
9. Do you drink tap water or soda? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Unfiltered tap water contains toxins like chlorine, and may contain other harmful toxins as well. Soda is highly acidic and can bomb your body’s systems with massive amounts of sugar
10. Do you feel fatigued, have low energy or poor sleeping habits? (yes = 1/no = 0)
Low energy is a sign of a slow metabolism. A slower metabolism means that it takes the body longer to complete vital processes like water elimination. The body releases a great deal of toxins from the cells during sleep. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your body may not have a chance to expel enough toxins from your cells
Detoxification is a gentle, long term process that relies on your body’s own waste elimination systems to expel toxins. In fact, you need do little more than just eat right, exercise, and drink healthy water. Alkaline water has shown a lot of promise for detoxification. Research done in Sweden revealed that women who drank alkaline water had significantly lower levels of mercury in their hair, compared to women who drank acidic water. A more recent study that examined 4 middle aged subjects who drank alkaline water for 2 months. It showed that the test subjects excreted 10 different heavy metals in their urine.
Did you score 4 or higher? Then read on for helpful hints on how to get your detox started!
If you are ready to detoxify, here are 10 tips to get you started:
1. Eat a diet that focuses on fresh vegetables and fruits.
Make sure to soak your fruit and vegetables in alkaline water because it neutralizes harmful pesticide/herbicide and insecticide residues. Ordinary water doesn’t neutralize acidic toxins the way alkaline water does
2. Eat whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
Nuts seeds and legumes are a healthy source of dietary protein – without the acidity of meat. Whole grains supply roughage that helps you eliminate solid wastes.
3. Adopt a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise. Use a sauna to sweat the toxins out.
Did you know? You can get benefits from exercising in as little as 10 minutes at a time. If you do 3 10 minute exercise sessions during the day, you get the benefit of a 30 minute workout. A sauna helps you sweat out those toxins after your workout.
4. Avoid chemical drugs and excessive alcohol.
You may have to take some prescription drugs, but the less you have to take, the better. Enjoy alcohol in moderation to avoid overloading your liver with toxins. Drink alcohol along with alkaline water, because alkaline water has been shown to have a protective effect on the liver.
5. Take a high quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.
Give your body the nutrition it needs to work it’s best. Make sure the ingredients used in your supplements come from natural sources.
6. Take nutritional/herbal supplements to protect and enhance organ functions.
Your best bet is to talk to a nutritionist to find the herbal supplements that are right for you.
7. Drink a glass of water and lemon juice every morning.
Lemon juice and water in the morning stimulates peristalsis movement of food and wastes through the digestive tract.
8. Go on a three day fast, four times per year (fasting at the change of the seasons is a good rule to remember).
Fasting allows your digestive tract to purge waste, rest, and repair itself.
9. Drink alkaline water from a water ionizer.
Alkaline water from a water ionizer has been shown to increase excretion of 10 harmful heavy metals. Remember that is also neutralizes pesticide, herbicide and insecticide residues on your fruits and vegetables. You can detoxify far more effectively if you avoid putting toxic residues in your body!. (Abraham, Guy, and Jorge Flebas) (Rosborg, I, B Nihlgard)
10. Meditate on self empowering affirmations to clear your mind.
The power of positive thought will help you stick to your detoxification goals. When your mind is clear, its much easier for you to focus on your goals. Another benefit is that meditation reduces stress, which can also contribute to poor health.
