Alkaline water, combined with a other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, can produce a potent antioxidant effect. Research suggests that the reason for this is that the process of breaking down free radicals requires two steps:
-
Break down Superoxide – a free radical – into water and Hydrogen Peroxide
-
Reduce hydrogen peroxide down to water
Alkaline water by itself doesn’t break down Superoxide, but it does improve the antioxidant effects of antioxidants like vitamin C that do. Superoxide is broken down into hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen. Hydrogen peroxide is still an oxidant, so it has to be broken down to stop it from harming your tissues. Alkaline water breaks hydrogen peroxide down into and water. (Lee, MY, YK Kim, and et al)
Alkaline Water Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) explained
You may have read that alkaline water with a high negative ORP is an antioxidant. The fact is, alkaline water with a high negative ORP has antioxidant potential – but that potential needs to be unlocked for you to benefit from it.
Antioxidants like ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) when combined with alkaline water will unlock the water’s antioxidant potential. Laboratory testing has shown that alkaline water makes vitamin C a more effective antioxidant. For this reason, you should combine alkaline water with other antioxidants. Antioxidant supplements vs Fruits and Vegetables
Research on antioxidant supplements in the body have shown no clear relationship between taking antioxidants and health. There is evidence that antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce risks of some illnesses. The reason fruits and vegetables have health protective effects may have more to do with the other nutrients in them.
Bottom Line: Clinical trials have shown that antioxidant supplements have no effect on health problems, but fruit and vegetables do.
Alkaline Water and Natural Antioxidants
If you want to combine alkaline water’s antioxidant potential with Vitamin C, your best bet is to simply drink alkaline water while eating an orange. This is a safe, natural way to combine two things that are good for you. Any fruit juice can be mixed with alkaline water to make it less acidic.
Coffee is also a rich source of natural antioxidants, and alkaline water makes better coffee. Alkaline water made by a water ionizer has a high enough pH to overcome the acidity of coffee completely. It makes a flavorful and aromatic cup of coffee.
By combining your favorite citrus fruit or coffee with alkaline water, you get the best of both worlds. You get the health benefits of both, without unwanted acidity. Science is still investigating the effects of antioxidants in the body, but it’s clear that fruits, vegetables, and coffee are good for you. So your best bet is to “stay natural” with healthy foods and alkaline water!
