What effect does the ph of water have?

The pH of water affects what you use it for

The pH of water determines if water is alkaline, acidic or neutral. Alkaline water is drunk for health purposes.  Neutral pH water is neither alkaline nor acidic. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, but pure water isn’t found in nature, and drinking it is bad for your health.

Effect of Alkaline pH Water

Water with a pH of greater than 7 is alkaline water. Alkaline water has been drunk for centuries for  health and healing. Alkaline water is found in nature at famous health spas like Nordenau in Germany, Hita Tenryosui in Japan, and Carlsbad Mineral Springs in California.

Access to the  alkaline spring waters found in nature is very limited, but alkaline water can also be made at home using a water ionizer or an alkaline filter pitcher. Ongoing scientific research is confirming the benefits of drinking alkaline water.

Effect of Acidic pH Water

If the pH of water is below 7, it is acidic. Acidic water can erode plumbing; because of this the EPA requires all tap water to have a pH of at least 6.5. Acidic water in the form of acid rain has done major damage to the forests of the Eastern US. Acidic drinking water is not good for your health, either.

Acidic water is great for your hair and skin. As a hair rinse, it makes your hair manageable and shiny. Acidic water is a natural astringent, so it can help your skin look young and healthy. Strong acidic water is used for sanitation, and has even been used as a rinse during open heart surgery in Japan!

Effect of Neutral pH water

Water with a pH of 7 can be either neutral water or pure water. Pure water with a neutral pH is made by distilling water, or through a reverse osmosis filter system. Pure water will become acidic water if it is exposed to air. It absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, and that makes it acidic. Never drink pure water; it can actually steal nutrients from your body!

Water that isn’t pure, but has a neutral pH of 7 is safe to drink. Many municipal water facilities shoot for a pH of 7 to avoid the risk of corroding their pipes. Hard water often has an alkaline pH because of the minerals in it.
